About Me

Hi! I'm Marcel Kapfer and I compose classical music.

I was born at the 24th October in 1996 in Dillingen at the Danube in Germany and also lived in that area until I was nearly 19 years old. My first decade was quite unspectacular concerning music.

Musical education in high school

I started playing the piano quite late when I was 10 years old. The reason for that was, that I joined the St.-Bonaventura-Gymnasium (a high school with an musical orientation) in Dillingen and I chose the piano as an instrument. I had no idea about music (neither practical nor theoretical) back then and wasn't quite good at it. Gladly my piano teacher, Miss Fey, was very patient and thought me how to play, even if I wasn't a good student the first years. Over time (starting around the age of 15) I got more interest in playing and practiced more and so my skill grew. Also since that age I had to go to the school choir and sang there as a bass until I finished school. It was much fun and really enjoyed the lessons - I still hope, that someday I have the time to join another choir.

It was also that time, when I discovered a music which I quite like and that inspired (and sill inspires me a lot): the music by Philip Glass. I also started experimenting with own melodies. And at the end of 2014 I wrote my first piece. Sadly in the following time I was busy with various things. Other personal interests as well as the A levels in school.

I finished my high school time with an A level in music (with the piano as my instrument).

University

In October 2015 I started studying computer science at the university of Ulm. I sometimes don't know why I decided to do this, but I was quite interested in the area back then (and partly I still am) and music was not an option, because my skills are way to bad to get accepted.

During this time I would have enough time to practice and compose a lot but out of some peculiar reasons I started investing more and more time into voluntary work in the student association. And this is actually the reason, that the second piece took nearly two years (from September 2015 to August 2017) to finish. Now it is completed and waits for me to record it (which hopefully will happen at the end of September or beginning of October).

Although I didn't compose much in this time, I disovered music from many more living composers like Johann Johannsson, Dustin O'Halloran and Max Richter.
